High-Quality Color Resist for Next-Generation Displays

Color Resist

As display image quality continues to advance, a key material for accurately reproducing colors is color resist for displays. It plays a crucial role in forming fine red, green, and blue (RGB) patterns across various technologies, such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light-emitting diode displays (OLEDs), and has a significant impact on brightness, contrast, and color reproducibility.

DNP Fine Chemicals provides high-quality color resist products and strong technical capabilities to meet these demands.

What is Color Resist for Displays?

Color resist for displays is a photosensitive material containing red, green, and blue coloration used to form color filters in LCDs and OLED displays.

Through photolithography technology, fine RGB patterns are created to accurately separate light from backlights or emission layers, enabling the reproduction of the colors required for display images. Because color resist with uniform pigment dispersion directly affects image quality factors such as chromaticity, transmittance, and contrast, high optical performance is required.

In addition, display manufacturing processes involve high-temperature treatment and light exposure, making it necessary to design materials with excellent heat resistance and light resistance that are less prone to color degradation even after long-term use. In this way, color resist is an essential material that supports both color performance and durability in displays.

Blue Color Resist

In 2015, we developed a dye-based blue color resist that combines high brightness, high transmittance, and high heat resistance, replacing the conventionally dominant pigment-based blue color resist. This achievement enabled superior color reproducibility and optical performance, establishing material technologies that contribute to enhanced display performance.

Low-Temperature Curable Color Resist

Applying Color Resist Instead of Polarizers

We have developed a low-temperature curing color resist that is essential for the Color Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) technology used in OLED displays. By combining our proprietary resin synthesis technology with photolithography technology, we have achieved color filter formation suitable for low-temperature processes.

In particular, this technology is expected to be applied to next-generation flexible displays that can be bent or rolled, and it significantly contributes to greater freedom in device design.

Main Applications of Color Resist

Color resist is an essential functional material used to form color filters indispensable for color display in LCDs, and it is also applied to OLEDs utilizing COE technology.

By accurately reproducing the color characteristics of each of the RGB colors and precisely controlling light transmission and absorption, color resist has a major influence on display image quality.

In recent years in particular, higher brightness, higher contrast, and wider color gamut have been increasingly demanded. To meet these requirements, higher performance and greater reliability of color resist have become ever more important. As a fundamental technology supporting high-definition visual expression, its use is expanding across a wide range of display applications.

High-Quality Color Resist Leveraging Four Core Technologies

By integrating four core technologies—pigment dispersion, resin synthesis technology, resist and ink formulation technology, and evaluation and analysis technology—we develop and manufacture high-quality color resist optimized for each customer’s operating environment and manufacturing process.

Through the combination of these technologies, we provide material solutions that meet a wide range of display performance requirements at a high level, including color reproducibility, durability, and processability.

Meeting Diverse Color Material Needs in Line with Trends

In line with the latest display trends and the performance requirements demanded by the market, we can propose color resist that meets a wide range of needs—such as high brightness, high contrast, and wide color gamut—by combining various color materials in an optimal balance.

Through careful selection of color materials and formulation design, properties such as color performance and transmittance can be finely adjusted, enabling optimal material design tailored to specific applications and device specifications.

Proprietary Original Color Materials (Blue Color Resist)

With our proprietary, originally developed blue color materials, we have overcome the heat resistance limitations that were traditionally considered a weakness of dye-based color materials.

As a result, we have enabled the mass production of blue color resist that achieves outstandingly high brightness by combining unprecedented color performance with excellent light transmittance.

Offering reliability that withstands high-temperature processes together with superior optical properties, this material is highly regarded as a key contributor to improved image quality in next-generation displays.

Core Technologies for Color Resist Development and Manufacturing

Precision Dispersion Technology

To achieve the high contrast performance required for displays, we are advancing the development of dispersion processes and molecular design that maximize the characteristics of each color material. As a result, we have realized the mass production of pigment dispersion with fine and uniform particle size distribution, and have established a stable supply system for high-quality color resist with excellent color performance, transmittance, and durability.

Resin Synthesis Technology

Resins used in color resist are required to provide a wide range of functions, including curability, developability, and adhesion.

We develop these resins in-house and have established a system that enables their mass production with optimally tailored functionalities.

Leveraging our proprietary material design capabilities and rapid development speed, we respond flexibly and swiftly to advanced requirements, achieving short lead times for mass production ramp-up and effective problem-solving.

Resist and Ink Formulation Technology

Color resist is composed of numerous raw materials, forming a complex material system in which these components interact with one another. Our advanced resist and ink formulation technology precisely accounts for these interactions, enabling us to provide color resist products optimized for each customer’s usage environment and process conditions. This strong formulation capability—allowing flexible responses to complex performance requirements—supports the development of high-performance, highly reliable materials.
