Directional backlight technology for automotive displays

Light Directive Backlight Unit

The light directive backlight unit is a system of backlight components for mobility that combines high luminance with a wide viewing angle through the optimization of light utilization efficiency and prism geometry.

By designing and supplying the components that make up the backlight as an integrated system, DNP reduces both the number of components and power consumption, thereby helping reduce environmental impact, including CO₂ emissions. The solution also enables a thinner backlight unit.

Background

In recent years, as the number of displays installed in vehicle cabins has increased, information not intended for the driver may enter the driver’s field of view and cause distraction. As a result, display design that takes both visibility and safety into consideration is becoming increasingly important.

Direct-lit backlights can readily achieve high luminance. However, they also tend to generate more heat, which may require larger heat sinks for thermal management.

The light directive backlight unit can control the direction of emitted light toward a specified eye point, helping improve safety. By combining an edge-lit LED configuration with a reverse-prism structure, it delivers high luminance  while minimizing heat generation.

Features

1. High luminance and a wide viewing angle

DNP designs and supplies the optical components that make up the backlight as an integrated system, allowing optical performance to be optimized for specific requirements.

Improved light utilization efficiency increases luminance, while optimized prism geometry provides a wide viewing angle. Compared with conventional standard component configurations, the solution also reduces the number of components.

2. Reduced power consumption

By improving light utilization efficiency, the light directive backlight unit reduces power consumption. This also enables the use of smaller batteries, contributing to lighter devices overall.

3. Contribution to lower CO₂ emissions

By reducing both the number of components and power consumption, the light directive backlight unit helps lower CO₂ emissions.

Usage

Our light directive backlight unit enables flexible light distribution designs tailored to a wide range of automotive display applications.

Cluster / High on-axis luminance

By concentrating light toward the center, the backlight can achieve twice the peak luminance of a conventional backlight.

Dual view display / Dual peak distribution

Prisms guide the light into left and right viewing directions, enabling a dual-view display to show different images to the driver and front passenger.

PHUD / Peak shift

Using a prism to obliquely shift the optical axis of the light emitted from the backlight makes it possible to reduce the volume of the HUD unit.
