DNP Achieved 170K Ton CO₂ Reduction in FY 2022 with Eco-Friendly Packaging

Tokyo, June 22, 2023, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is pleased to announce that in FY2022, we successfully reduced CO₂ emissions from total annual shipments of eco-friendly packaging¹ by approximately 170,000 tons (t) ², an increase from 150,000t in the previous fiscal year. That figure is equivalent to a forest area of approximately 13,500 hectares.

We are strengthening the development and provision of eco-friendly packaging targeting to reduce the burden on the global environment. As part of our efforts to visualize the environmental contribution level through our business, since FY 2019 we have continuously calculated the CO₂ reduction amount from the shipment volume of packages. 

In April 2022, we launched a service that visualizes CO₂ emissions³ throughout the entire life cycle of packaging, and provides third-party approved calculations⁴ to companies and organizations. 

In response to trends such as the enforcement of the Act on Promotion of Resource Circulation for Plastics and the establishment of the Guideline for Design of Plastics–Containing Products, which promote the 3R of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle + Renewable, DNP is promoting the development and provision of products and services that lead to reduced environmental impact.

Our eco-friendly packaging will be exhibited at the DNP booth at INTERPHEX JAPAN 2023 - 25th Int'l Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Manufacturing Expo held at Tokyo Big Sight from July 5 to July 7, 2023. Other products to be introduced alongside our eco-friendly packaging included environmental services, logistics management using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) or 2D codes, and anti-counterfeiting solutions.  

DNP Initiatives Targeting Reductions in the Environmental Burden

DNP constantly considers the harmonious coexistence between business activities and the global environment positions responses to environmental challenges as one of our most important management issues. The DNP Group Environmental Policy has been established for all employees, and we are promoting activities with a strong environmental consciousness throughout the supply chain, as well as complying with laws and regulations. In March 2020, we drew up the DNP Group Environmental Vision 2050 and are accelerating efforts toward the realization of a carbon free, recycling-oriented society and in harmony with nature. In particular, with the aim of realizing a carbon free society, we have set a goal of reducing GHG emissions from business activities at our business sites to net-zero by 2050, and are promoting reductions in GHG emissions through our products and services.

We have set a goal of increasing the share of eco-friendly packaging sales to   100% in our packaging-related product sales, and are promoting a range of initiatives based on guidelines and indicators of eco-friendly design.

Going forward, DNP will continue to strive to improve the value of eco-friendly products and services, and work together with stakeholders in all sectors and industries to realize a sustainable society in order to create a better future.
