DNP Acquires Eco Mark for Plant-Derived Packaging Materials
Simplifies the certification process for companies seeking Eco Mark certification for their product packaging
Sep 30, 2016
Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Eco Mark by DNP produced polyethylene (PE) film sales promotional materials. PE materials are part of the DNP plant-derived packaging materials series, using plant-derived materials as a means of reducing the use of petro-derived materials.
The Company also aims to acquire the Eco Mark for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film sales promotional materials in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017.
[Background]
DNP is focused on the development of a variety of lower environmental impact, sustainability-conscious packaging materials, and in 2010 developed a PE film partially based on plant-derived materials, while in 2012 the Company led the world in its development of a similar PET film.
These products make partial use of plant-derived materials, such as blackstrap molasses, a by-product of the production of sugar from sugar cane, and corn, and as a result, help reduce the use of petro-derived materials. As the plants also absorb CO2 from the air while growing, when compared to petro-derived plastic film, it is also possible to reduce greenhouse gas throughout the product lifecycle.
The Eco Mark is an environmental label applied to those products and serviceswith lower environmental impacts throughout their lifecycle, from raw materialsprocurement through production to disposal, which fulfill the criteria of contributingto environmental conservation. Displaying the Eco Mark helps producers markettheir products to consumers as environmentally-friendly merchandize.
In this latest development, DNP has acquired the Eco Mark in recognition of PE film sales promotional materials that are part of the plant-derived packaging materials series. As a result, companies using this PE film will be in a position to simplify the certification application process1 when acquiring the Eco Mark for packaging materials used with their products.
- To obtain Eco Mark certification, the bio-based synthetic polymer content must be 25% or more for plastic molded products and 10% or more for laminated packaging materials.
Looking Ahead
DNP aims for sales of 3.0 billion yen in FY2017 from the plant-derived packaging materials series.
Furthermore, DNP Plant-Derived Packaging Material Biomatech will be exhibited at the DNP booth at TOKYO PACK 2016 (Tokyo International Packaging Exhibition 2016), to be held at Tokyo Big Sight from Tuesday, October 4th to Friday, October 7th this year.
