DNP, Conexio and Atmark Techno Develop Gateway Terminal that Creates a High-Security IoT Environment
Applies smart card technology to prevent cyber-attacks such as data leakage and the hacking of devices
May 11, 2016
Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP), Conexio Corporation (Conexio) and Atmark Techno Inc. (Atmark Techno) have jointly developed a gateway terminal mounted with a Secure Application Module (SAM)*1 ffor embedding into equipment to whichsmart card technology has been applied, to achieve a high-security Internetof Things (IoT) environment. The new service will be launched in autumn 2016.
- 1 A module that mounts a secure IC chip with an application possessing security functions, such as data encryption, authentication and confidential information protection.
Background
In recent years, there have been reports of the fragility of in-vehicle computer systems. And as can be seen from the US example of the hacking of electronic bulletin board type road signs, there have also been increasing cases of built-in devices, without security measures, becoming the target of internet-based cyber-attacks, in much the same way as servers and Computers have. Countermeasures include examples of using dedicated lines, or mobile circuits blocked off from the internet, but these come with the challenges of higher operational costs compared to the internet, and of being unable to freely select a variety of cloud services.
In order to overcome these challenges, and create a secure IoT environment while using the internet to rein in operational costs, the partners have jointly developed an IoT gateway terminal that is capable of forwarding data safely, such as that acquired by various sensors and the logs generated by devices, to cloud services.
[New Gateway Terminal Features]
The new gateway terminal is based on Armadillo, the Atmark Techno produced platform*2for embedding into industrial equipment, and integrates the IoT gateway, jointly developed by Atmark Techno and Conexio, with SAM developed by DNP by applying the digital security technology accumulated from the smart card business.
In addition to encrypting communications data, by using SAM to authenticate equipment, and perform authenticity verification of the data acquired, or generated by the equipment, it is possible to prevent tampering with the equipment, software and data, or related identity theft, to achieve high level information security.
- 2 A generic base for developing embedded equipment.

[Looking Ahead]
In order to strengthen security measures with a view to the further penetration of IoT, DNP will operate an information sharing platform that includes the newly developed IoT gateway, and will support the establishment of a safe IoT environment.
The partners plan to provide approximately 100,000 product units by 2018, aiming for remote information security maintenance management, where equipment requires particular security, and information security maintenance management of social infrastructure.
As part of these initiatives, in conjunction with Laurel Bank Machines Co.,Ltd.,DNP has developed a service capable of performing remote maintenance management using IoT technology, while ensuring safety with sophisticated security technology for equipment, including the cash processing machine provided to financial institutions.Test operations will commence at the end of 2016.
This gateway terminal will be exhibited at the Atmark Techno booth (booth No. West 3-71) at the 5th IoT/M2M Expo Spring, which will be held at Tokyo Big Sight from Wednesday, May 11th to Friday, May 13th, 2016.
