DNP Develops Aseptic Filling-Compatible Container: PET Cup-Type Will Extend Shelf Life of Chilled Beverages

Uses recycled PET combined with aseptic filling technology to address environmental considerations and shelf-life extension

Tokyo, October 2, 2026, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has developed an aseptic filling-compatible polyethylene terephthalate (PET)*1 cup-type container that combines a PET cup maintaining high oxygen barrier properties, with our aseptic filling technology, to help extend the shelf life of beverages.

By combining a PET cup-type container featuring high transparency and barrier properties with our proprietary aseptic filling technology cultivated over many years, the new product achieves both extended beverage shelf-life and reducing the use of fossil resources. As a result, it contributes to reducing food loss and disposal costs faced by beverage manufacturers and distributors, as well as expanding sales areas.

As a first step, DNP will start the provision of beverage containers using the aseptic filling-compatible container: PET cup-type in 2027 via a collaboration with TOYOBEVERAGE CO.,LTD.

Background

In the chilled beverage market, there is a need to develop beverage filling technologies capable of extending shelf-life, as well as environmentally friendly containers compatible with such technologies, in order to reduce food loss and disposal costs.

In response to a request from TOYOBEVERAGE to develop a cup container made from PET material, DNP has combined aseptic filling technology, cup molding technology, and recycled PET utilization technology to develop the aseptic filling-compatible container: PET cup-type. Doing so makes it possible to achieve both extended shelf-life and reducing the use of fossil resources.

Features

1.Extended Shelf Life

Due to the physical properties of PET resin, the body of the cup in the new product maintains 25% higher oxygen barrier properties than our existing products, which helps prevent deterioration of the contents. In addition, by designing the product to withstand the high temperatures during aseptic filling and labeling, it has become possible to combine it with our aseptic filling system, which fills beverages while preserving freshness.

According to in-house research, this enables the shelf-life of chilled beverages to be extended, offering greater convenience for consumers.

2. Environmental Conscious Product Through the use of Recycled PET

By utilizing recycled PET for 10% of the PET resin used in the body of the cup, the new product reduces the amount of virgin PET used and contributes to the reduction of fossil resource consumption.

3.Contributes to Reduced Disposal Losses and Improved Inventory Management Efficiency for Beverage Manufacturers

The use of the aseptic filling-compatible container: PET cup-type extends the shelf-life of chilled beverages, enabling beverage manufacturers and distributors to manage their inventories more flexibly. It also contributes to reducing food loss and disposal costs.

In addition, extended product life makes it possible to distribute products to more distant areas that have traditionally been difficult to serve, meaning beverage manufacturers and distributors can look forward to expanding their sales areas.

Going Forward

DNP will provide the newly developed aseptic filling-compatible container: PET cup- type to beverage manufacturers, and including related aseptic filling systems, aims for cumulative sales of 1.6 billion JPY by FY 2027.

Moving forward, we will continue to develop new products with even higher barrier properties tailored to the characteristics of beverages, aiming to boost added value, including extending beverage shelf-life and preserving flavor quality.

This product will be showcased at DNP booth No. 1R13 situated in East Hall 1 during 2026 Tokyo International Packaging Exhibition (TOKYO PACK 2026), to be held at Tokyo Big Sight (East Hall) from October 14 - 16, 2026.
