DNP Develops Transmission-Type Screen for Mini-Projectors
Anticipated use as eye-catching sales promotion tool
Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has developed a transmission-type screenfor mini-projectors. By projecting images from projectors built into store shelvesat retail outlets, the new screen can be used to promote merchandise in spaces, presently taken up by price displays. DNP will launch sales of the new screenin April, 2016.
[Background]
At present, many price displays on store shelves at retail outlets, use electronicshelf labels, including LCD and e-paper. Needs exist to use this space for salespromotion activities, but uses have been limited to price displays given thatdisplay screens are too small, and can only display in monochrome.
DNP has overcome this challenge, and leveraged its projection screen designand manufacturing technology to develop a transmission-type screen for shortfocus and wide projection angle mini-projectors. By projecting images onto thescreen from such mini-projectors, it is possible to display high quality imagesclearly and without distortion. As a result, it is anticipated that the newlydeveloped screen will find uses as a sales promotion tool, projecting eye-catchingimages.
[Screen Features]
- The newly developed screen clearly displays images from mini-projectorshoused in store shelves.
- The screen is comprised of a prism lens with black stripes to absorbreflected light from external light sources, and a Fresnel lens. By optimizingthe shapes of the lenses, it secures a broad view angle, and realizes ahigh contrast, thus making it possible to clearly view text and images evenat an angle.
- The 1200mm wide and 60mm high screen not only displays prices in a stillformat, but also product explanation videos without distortion. Screen sizecan be customized according to different uses. Also, as the screen can beextended horizontally in a seamless style, it is also possible to presentconsumers with eye-catching images.
- Electronic shelf labels in current use must be applied on a product-by-productbasis. As a result, there is the need to alter displays with each productswitch-out or price change. With the new screen, these displays can be alteredmerely by switching the projected images, which helps boost employee workefficiency.
- Ahead of the official sales launch, the newly developed screen has beenadopted for electronic shelf labels by Cincinnati, OH-based supermarketoperator, The Kroger Company.
[Looking Ahead]
DNP will market the newly developed screen to retail outlets and store shelfmakers, aiming for sales of 5.0 billion yen in FY 2020 from screens, and relatedproducts, such as image contents.
DNP has positioned Knowledge and Communication, Food and Healthcare, Lifestyleand Mobility, and the Environment and Energy as business growth areas, and is engagedin the creation of new values. As part of those efforts, DNP is forging aheadwith the development of new products that leverage film with a variety of functions.
