Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) and SIG Combibloc Group (SIG), the world's leading manufacturer of carton packaging for food and beverages, will establish a joint venture in Japan, and commence the provision of new and unique configurations of carton packaging, along with new filling equipment for the Japanese market.

Aseptic filling system

The new system is capable of performing filling of both small solids, such as fruit, vegetables, cereal grains or jelly pearls, at the same time as the filling of liquids. The ability to fill carton packaging with solids makes the new system entirely unique.
The new system also boasts world class speed in the filling of carton packaging, being capable of filling a maximum of 24,000 cartons per hour. And apart from facilitating rapid product switch outs, the new system also makes it possible to reduce package material loss, and maintain a balance between flexible responses to a variety of product contents and low costs.

Carton packaging targeting both food and beverages

SIG provides a line-up of approximately 100 product varieties characterized by their configuration, offering differing formats, capacities and opening methodologies, including "combidome" and "combifit", which are SIG developed re-openable carton packs with a spout.
In addition, Heat & Go, a new container capable of being heated in a microwave oven is in development at present. When fully developed the combination of this new carton and solid contents filling capabilities will make it possible to provide a totally new product category, namely, heatable beverages containing solids.

[Looking Ahead]

DNP and the joint venture company will introduce new filling equipment from autumn 2018, and plan to commence delivery of packaging materials in early 2019. DNP and the joint venture company aim to capture the No. 2 share in the aseptic packaging filling market in Japan in 2022.
