Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is pleased to announce that the FY 2030 greenhouse gas (GHG) emission target drawn up by the DNP Group to reduce emissions by 25% compared to a 2015 base year, has been accredited by Science Based Targets (SBT), as a science-based initiative.

The SBT Initiatives are designed to prevent dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2 °C, as agreed under the Paris Agreement of 2015.    

Science Based Targets is an international environmental organization, with offices throughout the world.  

The historic Paris Agreement was adopted on December 12, 2015 at the 21st Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) or COP 21, in Le Bourget, near Paris, France.

So far, the entire DNP Group, including companies both in Japan and overseas, has been committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 10% by FY 2020, and 20% by FY2030 from a FY 2005 base-year. 

In order to achieve these goals, the company has been engaged in energy savings for air conditioning and motive power, along with operational improvements to manufacturing lines and increasing the efficiency of heat source equipment. 

As a result, DNP successfully reduced emissions targets by 16.3% to 929,000 tons in FY 2016, from 1,110, 000 tons in FY 2005. 

In this latest development, the company has further strengthened reduction activities against the backdrop of rising global concern for climate change, and has newly established a GHG emissions reduction target consistent with the Paris Agreement. 

Looking ahead, it will further strengthen GHG emissions reduction, including energy-saving activities, and the introduction of energy saving facilities. 

[Science Based Targets Initiatives]

The SBT Initiative was jointly launched in 2015 as a partnership among the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF).The objective of the SBT initiative is to achieve GHG emissions reduction targets consistent with the Paris Agreement of 2015 that aims to limit global warming to well below 2 °C as a long term goal. SBTs are goals based on scientific evidence. As of June 2018, 115 companies, including 20 from Japan have been certified.
